FAQs

Application

My computer crashed. I want to retrieve my online backup. How do I set up my new computer so it mimics the old one?
Obtain the value of the unique computer identifier for your old computer:

  • If your old computer is still available, obtain the computer identifier from the registry. If you do not have access to your old computer anymore, contact TrueSafe support to obtain your identifier and then proceed to the steps below for setting up your new computer.
  • Open the Windows Registry Editor. In Windows, choose Start Run, and enter RegEdit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrueSafe. If you are running Vista, do a search for the TrueSafe key. Note the value of the _mg entry. You will need this later.

Set the unique computer identifier on your new computer:

  • Install TrueSafe on your new computer, allow it to launch. Complete your SignIn as normal, enter your Registration Code, and then exit TrueSafe.
  • Create the same computer identifier entry on your new computer. Open the Windows Registry Editor. In Windows, choose Start Run, and enter RegEdit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrueSafe. If you are running Vista, do a search for the TrueSafe key.
  • Set the value of the _mg entry to the value obtained for your old computer.
  • Launch TrueSafe. Create a profile using the same Remote Computer. You should now be able to restore your data.

Can I override the Computer Name that TrueSafe shows?
By default, TrueSafe uses the computer name defined by your operating system. This name is shown in your email notifications, login status, and web pages used to administer backup over the internet. You can override the computer name by creating a registry entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\TrueSafe. Using the Registry Editor, choose Edit, Create New String Value. Set the Name to _mn and the set the value/data to be the desired name of your computer. You will have to exit and restart TrueSafe.

Online Administration

Why don't I see the hosted computer listed on the administration web page?
Until your hosted user executes a backup operation to your host computer, it will not show in the list of hosted computers.
